City Overview

The Temple city Bhubaneswar is the capital of the Indian State Odisha. It is the largest city in Odisha and is a centre of economic and religious importance in Eastern India. Along with the old town, the region historically was often depicted as Ekamra Kshetra (Temple City). Known as the “Temple City”, Bhubaneswar has a unique position by virtue of the ability to seamlessly integrate its rich cultural heritage with a strong regional economic base. Founded during the Kalinga Empire over 3,000 years ago.

Although the modern city of Bhubaneswar was formally established only in 1948, the history of the areas in and around the present-day city can be traced to 3rd century BCE and earlier. Bhubaneswar today boasts of a cluster of magnificent temples, constituting a complete record of Odisha temple architecture from its early beginnings to its culmination. Together with Puri and Konark, Bhubaneswar forms the 'golden triangle'--one of the most visited destinations in East India, for its proud possession of magnificent sculpture and majestic architectural heritage.
